Uncovered Cover: Bon Iver takes on Okkervil River's "Blue Tulip"

A couple years back when Okkveil River was set to release what would be part two of their two disc commentary on the struggles of fame and celebrity, The Stand Ins, a cast of indie rock musicians each took a stab at a certain track from the upcoming album.  The first installment I heard was from A.C. Newman of the New Pornographers providing his own version of the jangly sea tune "Lost Coastlines", but the one that I kept returning to was Justin Vernon aka Bon Iver's take on "Blue Tulip".  The original, which spanned over 6 mins, began as a soft struming, organ led ballad, but turns louder and heavier as a great riff leads the song to it's conclusion.  With Bon Iver covering the tune though, the result, as expected from most Bon Iver songs, was delicate and haunting.  Replacing Okkervil River front man Will Sheff's wailing as the song reaches its dramatic conclusion is the simple plucking and repeating the heartbreaking and defeated line "hats off to my distant hope".  Enjoy.
