Uncovered Cover: Modest Mouse and The Black Keys pay tribute to Buddy Holly

On June 28th, Rave on Buddy Holly, a tribute album to the late, great rock musician, will be released.  The album features covers of Holly's tunes from some of our favorite indie artists including She & Him, Fiona Apple, My Morning Jacket, and Julian Casablancas, in addition to classic acts like Paul McCartney, Lou Reed, and Patti Smith, and unfortunately Kid Rock.  For one of Holly's most memorable songs, Modest Mouse, one of the less obvious bands to be selected for the compilation, take the upbeat rockabilly tune "That'll Be The Day", and turn it into a slow and rather menacing number, seeming like it will reach it's boiling point and burst at any moment, but never quite does.  The jagged guitars that Modest Mouse do so well rear their head ever so slightly throughout the short song and eventually lead way to a soft string section reminiscent of "Blame It On The Tetons".

As for the Black Keys contribution, they take on the acoustic ballad "Dearest".  Having not been familiar with the laid back song prior to the Keys cover, I actually prefer the update version(sorry Buddy Holly fans).  The nice touch of drum, and the always great vocals of Dan Auerbach make this song a perfect addition to a back BBQ mix on a nice summer night.   Enjoy.
