Album Review: The Constellations- Southern Gothic

When I saw The Constellations at Soundlab last month my initial impression was these guys really have something here.  They rolled through their set with nothing but pure power.  I instantly became excited with the anticipation of their first studio effort.

Fast forward a month later I am sitting here listening to their freshman release Southern Gothic on repeat.  The album immediately begins with the feeling you are about to take a musical thrill ride.  The opening drums for “Setback” provided by Jason Nackers are very reminiscent of the likes of The Polyphonic Spree and then the song just explodes in to it’s own.  Next up is “Perfect Day” where the listener gets a real taste of lead singer Elijah Jones deep and soulful vocals and now the adventure is full steam ahead.

In my opinion the most important part of an album are the songs in the middle.  There needs to be a few songs that really rock and gear you up for the conclusion of the album.  This is exactly what The Constellations do here and they really bring it.  “Take a Ride” which will more than likely be my song of the summer, really showcases eccentric keyboardist Jamie Gordon’s talent and flows right in to “Were Here to Save the Day”.  With the help from the background singers Alaina and Shab, Jones is allowed to really open up and delivers a mid tune poetic rap.

“Felicia”, a very powerful song, deep lyrics, soulful bass (thanks to bassist Wes Hoffman and his killer afro.)  This song sounds to me that it will be a crowd favorite.  Next track is “Step Right Up” which is listed as a tribute to Tom Waits and in my opinion, it is rightfully so.   The album comes full circle with the last track “On My Way Up” which is extremely fitting for the conclusion and confirms for the listener the ride is over.

This album deserves a definite complete listen, each track is well produced and worth giving attention to. It is always great to see a new band with a very strong first release.  I expect big things from these guys.  I will be catching them at Camp Bisco next month and I am very excited to see them again.
