Lollapalooza: Day 1

Exhausted and sunburned like a lobster, day one of Lollapalooza was something else. Arriving just a few minutes too late to see Javalin :( but just in time for Wavves :) the day was off to a good start. Make sure to pick up a ticket for their show on Sept 16th at Mohawk. Cymbals Eat Guitars were good but not great. Too much screaming perhaps. With the hopes of something refreshing and unfamiliar, I walked to the BMI stage to see up and coming glam gossip shock rockers Semi Precious Weapons. Billed as Lady Gaga's favorite band and signed to Perez Hilton's record label, I expected some moderately entertaining pop music and I got something bizarrely captivating. Lead singer Frank Turner is like a cross between Freddy Mercury and Lil' Kim. Vulgar and explicit, the band was explosive from the start, but that doesn't even begin to describe what happened next. Lady Gaga herself, who was watching from back stage came front and center to join in during the song "Magnetic Baby". During the song she, smashed some drums, help sing some vocals, made out with Frank Turner, and then stage dived(twice!) into the crowd who almost didn't let her go. From there I stopped off at the Dirty Projectors who were more ordinary than I remember them being.  The Black Keys were one of the highlights of the day, hands down. Be sure to check craigstlist for tickets to their sold out show at Town Ballroom sept 2, they were that inspiring. Chromeo was next and they killed it! Lady Gaga provided the most intriguing set of the night, although it fell a little flat with too much emphasis on confusing theatrics and and not enough on the music. The day ended with The Strokes who were just plain great.
