Lollapalooza: Day 2

Day two of Lollapalooza started with a little less sun and a few more mosquitoes. First up was the brilliant Morning Benders who were as sweet as molasses. Next, the new age indie punk of Harlem, who switched instruments through out the set and provided an up tempo sound to help beat the heat. Dragonette(who plays Monday in Buffalo) turned the BMI stage into a dance club rave. Lead singer Martina Sorbara was powerful, commanding and reminded me of Cassandra from Wayne's World. The XX and Grizzly Bear provided a mellow, and dare I say, somewhat boring part of the afternoon. I always considered The XX a little overrated and Grizzly Bear almost lulled me to sleep. Perry Ferrell had himself a terrific DJ set where he competed against friend and fellow DJ, Chris Cox. The man of the weekend was on fire and incorporated technofied pieces of his own material from Jane's Addiction into his mixes.  Deer Tick had been a recent discovery of mine despite being around for a few years and they did not disappoint. Front man John McCauley provided humorous banter between songs and there was a comradeship between band mates that seemed more evident than any of the other musicians I had seen to that point. Metric brought the electro-glam rock back into focus but it all seemed done before. Their set list was almost song for song what it was when they visited Buffalo months ago including the acoustic 'combat baby' encore. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros attracted the biggest crowd of the day to the Bloggie stage. People packed as tight as they could into the small fern gully-like stage even climbing into the trees to get a glimpse at the band. Cut Copy's set was similar to Metrics in sound and energy. The few new tunes played were well received although the set was almost entirely devoted to the songs from the "In Ghost Colours" album. Phoenix ended the night with the singalong modern day pop classics we've come to learn the last two years. Sure it was fun hearing 1901 and Lisztomania live again, but not necessarily exciting or fresh. Still, it was a great day.
