Album of the Week: Chromeo - Business Casual

The first time I listened to Chromeo, I had the thought that there was no way this one trick pony was going to last. No way could this shtick of theirs hold anyone's interested too long. For anyone who doesn't know, Chromeo's sound is similar to the club dance funk of the 80's (Prince, The Time, Rick James). But today, lo and behold, the band has defied my initional impression and released thier 3rd full length LP Business Casual.  From the begining of Business Casual, it's eveident that Chromeo has matured as a band.  The songs are fuller, layered with even more snyth-pop bass and voicecoder backing vocals that you can shake a stick at. While the previous album had 4 or 5 good songs, this album has around 8 or 9 good songs. There is also a little more verity this time around. The song J'ai Claque La Porte, is slow for Chromeo standards, and is sung almost entirely in french. It makes sense when you remember Chromeo is from Montreal, and lead vocalist Dave is getting his doctorate in french literature and teaching at Columbia University. While the album isn't perfect, it is pretty darn good and proves that Chromeo is here to stay.
