Album of the Week: Grinderman - Grinderman 2

Nick Cave is one busy dude. The Aussie musician has who started the garage-blues-punk bands The Birthday Party & The Bad Seeds also writes, directs, and sometimes acts in films.  Just yesterday while watching the movie The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (great movie!), Cave himself appeared on screen toward the end playing acoustic guitar. After further investigation, he also apparently wrote the soundtrack with Warren Ellis. This fall, Cave and his newest project Grinderman, released their sophomore effort, aptly titled Grinderman 2. Like the first Grinderman album, Grinderman 2 is full of heavy guitar distortion & spoken word-like rants and monologues. Most of the songs have an upbeat, driving sound punctuated with chorus filled with hooting or howling. The interesting use of guitar effects give the album a jagged and rough around the edges feel, while the backing vocals give it a melodic and balanced touch. Its stoner-rock meets garage-blues with a zombie beatnik poet crooner on vocals. In the end, the album just feels plan scary. Its an intense and fierce piece of work making it the perfect fit for the first week of October.
