Interview with Darren Shearer of the NEW DEAL

The long awaited return of the NEW DEAL finally ends this weekend as the electronic trio comes to town for the Sound in Motion weekend along with livetronica brothers Lotus.  Drummer Darren Shearer was kind of enough to give Buffablog an interview.

Buffablog: First of all thank you for taking the time to do this.  You [Darren] and Jamie have preformed as the Join with bands such as Umphrey's McGee, STS9 and Brothers Past.  Are there any other bands that you would like to collaborate with in the future?
Darren Shearer:  Honestly I dont know, we are very open to new collaborations.  The Join's main purpose is bringing the NEW DEAL to other musicians, the essence and improv of our band, while trying to methodically create new music without just improvising.  It's really cool to play with musicians that are not really used to trying this type of musical creation.  We played with Marc Brownstein from the Disco Biscuits and he asked us what the first song would be, we told him we will figure it out when we get up there.

BB: You guys recently put out live in Toronto, any plans on a studio album soon?
DS: Well, right now we have taken on Madison House Management and are really focusing on making new music and evolving.  Our music has evolved so extremely over the last year, and we really want to just keep creating new live music.  There may be some tracks in the future but not necessarily a studio album.

BB: the NEW DEAL started out in Toronto and have come south to Buffalo and surrounding areas many times.  When the band is preparing a tour is this area a priority?
DS: Basically we love upstate new york, we actually feel like we have neglected Buffalo in the past.   Buffalo is going through a crazy change and has gone through its lows but it definitely beginning to flourish musically again and make it's way back.  Playing in Buffalo right now is absolutely the right thing to do.

BB: This weekend you will be performing in what Buffalo is calling the sound in motion weekend with Lotus, do you feel that these type of jamtronica pairings are becoming more popular?
DS: Oh absolutely.  This sub-genre is starting to blow up, and really recreate the scene in an amazing way.  These type of pairings are great for live music.

BB: We have seen you at many different annual festivals like Camp Bisco and moe.down.  Is there one festival you like playing at most?
DS: That's an Interesting question.  We really love playing All Good, we just love the whole atmosphere there.  Camp Bisco is run amazingly, and this years was probably the best we have been apart of.  Starscape is a bit "concretey," but really like that industrial urban setting right on the water.  We had a lot of fun at North Coast as well.  I guess we love em all.

BB: What would you say are your drumming influences?
DS: My main influences are electronic drums and DJ's.  Obviously other influences would be John Bonham and Stuart Copeland.  I really have been influenced by early 90's house music, where DJ's were gods.  This genre is real now and we have to carry it even further, with sub-genres and just having this amazing scene flourish.

BB: What is one thing you guys as a group would like your fans to know about you?
DS: If there was one thing I would really like our fans to know is that we are there for them.  In the beginning we were an improv band, playing around on stage and making music.  We feel that now we have evolved in to so much more than just an improv band.  We are out there to create structural and complete music.  If the fans are in to the show, we are feeding off of them and working even harder to entertain.

The New Deal is playing Saturday night at The Town Ballroom as part of the Sound in Motion weekend mnm presents thankfully put together for us! There are still tickets available! Don't miss Lotus tonight or any of the awesome after parties going on at Soundlab!
