Collector is a great song that sounds as uplifting and wide eyed as anything else in recent memory. Its a joyous indie pop gem that full to the brim of charm and hope.
Bambi sounds like the perfect song to break dance to. It has a great intro that's sounds chaotic and disjointed before settling into memorable lyrical grove. These kids nailed it with a great sophomore album that's definitely one of our favorites this year.
Ampling Amp is everything you would hope a yeasayer single would be. Its experimental, somewhat organic in nature, and poppy in those R&B like vocals. in our opinion Ampling Alp is the best tune yeasayer has ever crafted and lifts the bar to a new level.
probably the best opener to an album this year, All Around is a cinematic-like audio masterpiece that sounds like it was made for the big screen. ceo'c brain child Eric Berglund creates songs that sound like they we're composed by an robot orchestra and have a beautifully foreign feel.
Rambling Man was our favorite song from UK folk singer Laura Marling this year. The song uses striking melodies and poetic lyrics that create a very emotional quality to it. Fellow British folkster Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons since back up vocals to most of this amazing album
Floating Vibes grabs your attention at the beginning with a great guitar hook and a drum beat that just puts a smile on your face from the first note.
I've never though I liked folky blue grass until i heard Mumford & Sons. Little Lion Man is an indulgent folk song that was on stuck on repeat the first time I heard it. Although the song debuted in 2009 in the UK, it wasn't released in the states until 2010. A nice, fashionably late present from these London quartet.
Jonsi's Go Do has all the elements of a Sigur Ros song but adds a little more color to the mix create something instantly like able. It's simple and uplifting, and makes me want to get up and challenge the world to be something better.
All of my favorite tracks on The Black Key's most excellent LP Brothers are the ones that sound like Odis Redding. Ten Cent Pistol would sound perfect in any Quintin Terentro movie. It a classic song that just sounds timeless.
Cee Lo green is so cool. While everyone and their mother we're hooked on F*ck You we couldn't stop listening to this other stand out track on The Lady Killer. Bright Lights Big City has a late 80's pop feel with a Michael Jackson bass line that's almost too catchy for its own good. plus Cee Lo still has the coolest voice in modern music
Local Natives blew up in 2010 because of songs like Airplanes. The Lyrics that speak to the soul for anyone whose dealt with heartbreak and an expanding instrumental backdrop, the song became an unforgettable part of this past year.
Sleigh Bells we're the 'it' band of the blogospher earlier this year and with good reason. They're heavy on guitar, turn the amps up to 11 and dive head first into a sound not suitable for libraries or apartments with paper thin walls.
King of Spain was our favorite song on the fantastic LP, Wild Hunt. It was our first introduction to Swedish folk star The Tallest Man of Earth and it resonated with us immediately. Its still a song i sometimes find myself unintentional humming from time to time
When Archandriod came out, it was instantly considered to be in contention for record of the year. I can't think of anyone since James Brown to have that type of neo-soul funk beats or dance moves that look that effortless.
The now fro-less Erykah Badu, returned to the forefront of the music scene with the 2nd installation of the her New Amerykah albums. Window Seat was a great song to begin with, but by adding a controversial music video it became impossible to forget.
Although The Age of Adz was a terrific album, our favorite song from Sufjan came from his EP All Delighted People. Like all Sufjan Stevens songs, there is a lot going on. things like gospel background vocals, a horn section, strings on top of strings, the kitchen sink, etc, keep the 11 minute saga constantly changing and never staying still long enough to get stale.
Cousins as all the elements of a traditional Vampire Weekend song but adds a little bravado to the mix. Its a great song that displays the bands ability to create danceable island indie rock but with a little more bo diddly guitar technique.
Excuses is a great song to close a concert with. Its the kind of song that encourages the crowd to sing along with the band and have one last kind of connection before separating. At first listen the song might seem simple, but upon each next listen you start to see how grandiose the music really is.
The opening track to Broken Social Scene's Forgiveness Rock Record sets the mood for a very concise and focused set of songs. World Sick has a very full sound and a orchestra of glittery guitars that make it sound like the most mature stuff BSS has ever written.
Every song on That National's High Violet is a winner in our book. We choose Bloodbuzz Ohio since it was the hit single that got the most airplay & because its impossible not to sing with.
5. Pretty Lights - I Can See it in Your Face
2010 was a huge year for Pretty Lights. With three full EP releases in one year and probably his biggest tour since he hit the scene along with multiple festival appearances and opening for some of the scenes biggest acts. This track off the first EP of the year perfectly showcases what he planned to do in 2010.
Beach house blew us away this year with the critically acclaimed Teen Dream. I didn't even know what dream pop was until i heard the opening guitar notes of zebra was instantly transported to a place in the clouds. No one else on our list has a sound like Beach House and for that reason they have created a sound that's a totally game changer. Like the lyrics to the song Zebra, Beach House have create music that expands like 'wilderness for miles' with 'eyes so wise and mild'.
Not surprisingly, Power is the most powerful song on Kanye's outstanding new album 'My Beautiful, Dark, Twisted Fantasy'. Like Babe Ruth calling his shot, Kanye West hits a home run, creating a head bumping beat that samples Kings Crimson, uses a driving hand clap drum beat and lyrics that's of course will offend someone out there.
We Used to Wait is a beautiful intricate piece of work that's powerful and complex. When you compare a song like We Used to Wait with a song like neighbors #4 you see how far the band has come. The band has become a little more adventurous and feels more comfortably straying away from safety of a four chord progression. Win butler leads his band like a childhood gang through the streets of the suburbs in a way we'll never forget
If this one took you by surprise, then you must not have been reading our blog for the last year. we LOVE James Murphy and his song Home got the most plays on our itunes by more than a few lengths. One of the reasons it became the top song of song 2010 was because of its replay value. 8 months later and I'm still not sick of it this year. Its an uptempo dance heavy song that's lets the listener let go of their reassurances and sub come to the groove. Its the kind of song that every one can dance to, even if your the type who just likes have your arms crossed and stand in the back. So thank you LCD Soundsystem, for putting a smile on my face and a hop in my step, and keeping my dreams alive.
