Garage lo-fi indie rockers Smith Westerns should really give themselves a pat on the back for this one. Dye It Blonde, the latest release from these Chicago kids, is a clean as a whistle, synth happy sing-a-long LP, perfect for any type of celebration. The sophomore release takes everything I enjoyed from their debut release (that post punk glam rock sound) and polishes it up so it sounds like it was actually recorded in a studio and cost more than 50 bucks to make. In the same way Wavves cleaned his sound for King of the Beach, SW build upon a great idea and allow the listener a chance to enjoy every lyric and shimmering synth note. This cleaner sound will no doubt make the band more accessible but at the same time no less melodic or ingenuitive. Sure the bands gets a lot comparisons to David Bowie or T. Rex, but I honestly see the most resemblance to Electrical Light Orchestra. Track 3 on Dye it Blond, the delightfully upbeat and busy Imagine Pt. 3, sounds every bit as good as ELO's Mr Blue Sky. Something about those neon laser guitar leads and the on again/off again piano playing makes me think it would be great for a VW commercial. Ultimately, these young lads who aren't even old enough to drink yet have all the potential in the world and if things keep going in this direction, it wouldn't be a surprise to see them headlining a festival or two in a five years.
