Picking Up The Slack For MTV: Okkervil River

Okkervil River spent their last few albums, all concepts, commenting on celebrity, the price, pitfalls, and burdens of fame.  While all great, especially the back to back released The Stages Names and The Stand Ins, the dark and heavy mood set across the albums was in need of a relief.  Their new album, I am Very Far features songs that can stand on their own as no unifying theme links them.  Their first single off the album, "Wake and Be Fine" is song with building, scattered, symphonic melodies.  As a long time Okkervil River listener, its a song that is strikingly different than most any song they have released.  The track was recorded live with nearly a dozen musicians manning guitars, pianos, and drums.  The accompanying video seems to give a chaotic version of those recording sessions as musicians pop up all over the place, confusing the viewer as to which band member is playing what .  The video, shot in black and white, acts almost as a karaoke video of sorts as well as the lyrics are plastered all over the place as singer/songwriter/band leader Will Sheff delivers them at a frantic pace.  Enjoy.
