When thinking of a music festival, the first things that probably come to mind are tye-dye, jam bands, and hippies. At Rock the Bells, though, you’re more likely to find graffiti, rap crews, and break dancers. The 2011 lineup for hip hop’s take on the music festival has been announced, and it’s a very impressive one (see the picture above for the entire thing). Headlining are Nas – who will be performing his classic album Illmatic along with fellow legends AZ, Pete Rock, and DJ Premier – and Lauryn Hill of the Fugees. This year’s most exciting new feature is the 36 Chambers Stage, which will feature sets from Wu-Tang Clanners Raekwon & Ghostface, GZA, Masta Killa, and RZA, who is also the festival’s host. Other highlights include Cypress Hill, Black Star (Mos Def & Talib Kweli), Black Moon, Curren$y, Souls of Mischief, and, for those who will be taking the GRE soon afterward, Immortal Technique. There are only four dates, and two are in California, but for hip-hop fans, this lineup just may be worth the trip to the September 3rd show in New York City or the September 10th show in Boston. Tickets go on sale June 4th.
