The 23rd Artists & Models affair is tonight at the Rock Harbor Yard!! Rapture/Rupture satirically references Harold Camping's (Christian radio broadcaster) prediction that "Rupture" or the end of the world will occur, well... today. This event (or more like institution in Buffalo) is a favorite amongst the art, music and cultural aficionados in the area. A&M has showcased some of Buffalo's more incredible venues such as Central Terminal, Dnipro Ukrainian Center, the Pier, the Trimain Center, the Broadway Market, and Shea's. The site for A&M is always symbolic of the event's underlying theme said to "represent a location, a state of being, an apparition, a temporary psychosis, a breeding ground for frivolity."
If you didn't go last year you'll have to come this year to see for yourself how appropriate the Rock Harbor Yard is for such an affair. This obscure spot is tucked between Niagara Street and the Scajaquada creek bike path. In fact, this year there will be bike escorts guiding safety-conscience urban cyclists on the path- a practical way to control the always-annoying parking situation at these events.
After visiting the space during set up this week, some pieces I'm looking forward to seeing are Allie Brady and Esther Neison's sexually charged spoof on contemporary art and curators, Scott Bye's large outdoor sculpture Rapture/Rupture and Brian Millbrand and Jan Nagle's video installation Daymares: Vignettes of the Prepocalypse.
Hallwalls Media Curator Carolyn Tennant is looking forward to the performance by Transgendered Jesus who performed at the first A&M. This year A&M will also reintroduce on-site artist paintings featuring A.J. Fries, Joyce Hill, Candace Keegan, Gennifer Felicity Krupper, Sarah Sutton, Chuck Tingley. 40 installations by local, regional and international artists (theres a group from Guelph) and entertainers including Bev Beverly, 12/8 Path Band, DJ LoPro, the Springville All Star Marching Band and Pixies cover band Debaser should deliver plenty of entertainment this evening.
And of course one can always look forward to the burlesque offering each year at A&M. This year the burlesque show will be performed by Obskyura. I hope we get to see this performance of Pink Floyd's Great Gig in the Sky (disclaimer: this video contains nudity and passion). Just seeing this alone might be worth the $20 bucks.
