Tonight: Bob Dylan's 70th Birthday Celebration
70 years ago yesterday, Robert Zimmerman was born in Duluth, Minnesota. He would later change his name to Bob Dylan when he began to dabble in music and the rest, as they say, is history. He became one of the main faces of the American folk music protest movement during the 1960s and has since recorded over 30 albums with many claiming him to be the greatest songwriter of modern music. Tonight at Nietzsche's, the music and still going strong life of Dylan will be celebrated by The Complete Unknowns covering their favorite tunes of the folk musician. Despite his age, Dylan is still out on the road pretty much every year. My father and I saw him last fall at RIT, and while his voice seems to be getting worse (those who saw the Grammys certainly know what I mean), he has turned his classic folk songs into road house blues type numbers, giving new life to the old cuts. The latest issue of Rolling Stone features a nice retrospective on this best songs, including musicians writing about their favorite Dylan tunes. Mine would still have to be "Not Dark Yet", or maybe "Positively 4th Street." Tonight's Bob Dylan 70th Birthday Celebration begins at 9:00pm
