Tonight: Aqueous

On the same night that legendary jammers the Grateful Dead reincarnate themselves in the form of Dark Star Orchestra at the Erie Canal Harbor, Nietzsche's will be hosting Buffalo's best local take on the genre. Aqueous, who released the full-length Giant Something earlier this year, will be headlining a bill that also includes Funktional Flow and Rochester's Pia Mater. Aqueous has been on quite an impressive run lately, and the band does not look or sound like it is reeling from the sudden departure of former drummer Brad Darrall (Nick Sonricker, the former percussionist, has taken over duties behind the kit). Seeing Aqueous is just like seeing any of your favorite jam bands: the band keeps the crowd moving at all times, displays impressive chops and sprawling, improvised takes on original tunes, and treats audiences to covers that are only sometimes planned. Guitarists Mike Gantzer and Dave Loss will sure to be trading solos all night long at Nietzsche's, a venue that Aqueous has turned into a stronghold. The show gets going at 10 p.m., and concertgoers will pay $5 at the door.
