Album of the Week: Girls - Father, Son, Holy Ghost

San Francisco indie rock outfit Girls have returned with their 2nd full length release, titled Father, Son, Holy GhostAlbum, the duo's debut record,  was full of heart on your sleeve vocals and simple, retro rock sounds.  Their follow up EP, Broken Dreams Club, was surprisingly expansive, as mariachi horns and hazy psychedelics added to Girls' growing palette of sounds. The duo's best instrument though, remained lead singer/songwriter Christopher Owens' wounded croon that recalls both Roy Orbison and Elvis Costello at times.

The beginning of Father, Son, Holy Ghost does not stray too far from Album's 50s rock sound on the peppy, surf rock infused "Honey Bunny".  With "Die", Father's third song, though, everything changes.  The hard driving track, sounding nothing like Girls have ever put out, could be the soundtrack of a stoner rock drag race as the guitars and drums barrel towards the finish line while the final minute of the song gives the listener a moment to catch their breath.  "Vomit", the six and a half minute centerpiece of the album features Owens at his most vulnerable.  Beginning with simple guitar plucking and strumming, Owens' spends his nights "looking for you ba-by", until the song explodes with electric organ(the album's secret weapon) and scuzzy guitar lines. The gospel wailing that bring the track to it's epic conclusion reach near Dark Side of the Moon territory.  "Just a Song", the meditative, nearly seven minute track that follows "Vomit", continues to showcase Owen's soft, almost child like voice, but the backing flutes(!) give the song a warm, dream like mood.

Father, Son, Holy Ghost closes with "Jamie Marie".  Owens, normally sounding battered and beaten, seems to have come to piece with his demons, delivering the line "easy come and easy go, whatever" in an almost reflective manner as the uplifting organs leads the album to its rewarding end.  Girls' Father, Son, Holy Ghost will be released on September 13th.
