Know Your Opener: Pia Mater

There's a big Brothers Past show tonight at Soundlab, and if you're going, you want to get there early (doors open at 9 p.m.) for the opening act - Rochester's Pia Mater. Formed in 2004 at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Pia Mater's music is mostly instrumental jam-funk with prog-rock and jazz influences; in simpler terms, they're groovy. The first song that automatically plays when visiting their website reminds me of Umphrey's McGee: tight, carefully composed, and funky in the main section, with a raging jam of a guitar solo in the middle. And then the next song that plays sounds like a bonus level from Sonic the Hedgehog before it settles into some jazz-rock fusion. If that doesn't spark your interest, what will?
