Tonight at the UB Center for the Arts, Chick Corea's Return to Forever IV will be showcasing virtuosic skills and brilliant compositions, but first, Zappa Plays Zappa will be sure to appetize the audience with an equally unique performance. Led by the late Frank Zappa's son Dweezil, the band plays tribute to Frank's enormous musical accomplishments over the span of over three decades. Zappa is perhaps one of the most underrated guitarists in rock history; his innovative playing deserves to be mentioned among the typical heroes like Hendrix, Page, and Vaughan, but it rarely does. His quirky, often silly lyrics may seem shallow at first, but Frank loved to poke fun at accepted doctrines and theories of songwriting, and he often was saying something thought-provoking. His experimentation with many different songforms and genres matched his willingness to stand outside the norm in the social and political arena as well. The Zappa Plays Zappa performance is sure to be an eclectic one that will get listeners ready for the musical explosion that Corea and Co. will provide.
