New RCHP + New Sublime = '90s throwback

If you grew up in the '90s like I did, listen up. Two of my favorite groups of musicians to ever pick up guitars and drumsticks, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Sublime, have recently released new music.

First off, the Chili Peppers. Their 10th studio album, I'm With You, is set to be released on August 26, and it will feature their 77th (I'm only slightly exaggerating) guitarist, newcomer Josh Klinghoffer, who will replace the departed-for-the-second-time-and-more-than-slightly-crazy John Frusciante. The first single from the album, "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie," is streaming below. It's nothing extraordinary, and I'm not crazy about the poppy chorus, but I have a feeling it'll be stuck in my head either way. Even though the single isn't fantastic, I still have a good feeling about the album.

Next, Sublime (With Rome). For legal reasons, the band can't call itself Sublime anymore, as the late and great Brad Nowell owned the rights to the name. (That's the right move - he wrote all the music and lyrics, and it was totally Nowell's band.) But when the band reformed with the young Rome Ramirez, who is the closest thing we have to Nowell's musical clone, the logical name was Sublime With Rome. They have released their first album as a threesome, titled Yours Truly, earlier this month, and it's a really good listen, especially in the summertime. It's a little poppier than what we would have gotten from Brad (he had more punk influences than Ramirez), but that's not a bad thing; it makes for a really fun album. The first single, "Panic," is streaming below.
