I had the great pleasure of seeing a sold out Foster the People show at the Tralf Tuesday night and was beyond impressed. Over the past couple months I had been enjoying their debut album Torches and I was interested to see how it would be performed live. I have seen plenty of up and coming bands with similar style of music that get up on stage and perform the songs exactly as you hear them on the album and then leave after their 40 minutes set. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that Foster the People embraced the live atmosphere and really rocked out to their songs. They were well rehearsed and obviously comfortable performing live to were they could really break apart the song and rock out. What really stood out the most was the intensity of the drummers on stage that added an extra build up to really get the songs moving. Lead singer, Mark Foster had the crowd engaged throughout the show and informed us that his own mother had been born in Buffalo (yay!).
There is no doubt that these guys are talented. Highlights of the show were their songs "Call it What You Want", "Life on a Nickel" (Foster talked about the charity bus tour they are doing this fall... check it out and help) and their most popular song "Pumped Up Kicks". What really made the show memorable was the encore. They came on stage and Mark Foster told the crowd a story about how when years ago he had moved to LA to persue his music career and ran into Rivers Cuomo of Weezer at a party. He managed to get Cuomo into a room to play him a 3 minute instrumental piece he had written on guitar. Foster claims it was most likely the worst 3 minutes of Cuomo's life because he humbly admitted he sucked back then. Cuomo then taught him the chords to the epic track "Say it Ain't So". Years later, Foster finds out Weezer has been covering his song "Pumped Up Kicks" on their latest tour... pretty impressive turn around. So Foster the People returned the favor with performing a spot on cover of "Say it Aint' So". Overall, the show was great. I can't wait to hear what these guys come up with next and I just hope they don't forget to come back to Buffalo on their next tour so the rest of you music lovers can see them too. Here are some youtube videos from the performance:
