I heard the band Such Gold before I knew anything about them, and my immediate impression was “are these dudes from Rochester?” Their tight and punchy pop-punk drumming, fast and catchy (mostly A-string) guitar riffs, and melodic, not-too-aggro hardcore (and dare I say, early emo) vocals – with the signature sing-along “whoa”s – all scream Flower City Sound. I'm hoping they play the song “Four Superbowls No Rings” when they hit Sugar City tonight (19 Wadsworth, 7pm, $10 donation), though the anthem is likely to either start some fights or make grown men cry. But it's okay 'cause it's about sports, right?
And yes, they are a Rochester group, and yes, they are legit: their latest EP (Pedestals) was released by 6131 Records, who's been putting out vinyl by the likes of Bane and Alpha & Omega. Fans of Saves The Day and Hot Water Music (or other Rochester punk-core stand-outs like Polar Bear Club and Marathon) wont want to miss it, and support from Rust Belt Lights, Basement, and Anchor Me Down ensures that this is going to be a fun, fist-pumping, finger-pointing night all around.
Also, frontman Ben Kotin got stabbed after a show in Boston recently, so you might want to check it out before his would-be assassins return to finish the job.
