Know Your Opener: Porcelain Raft

Mauro Remiddi started out soundtracking: his collaborations with art film directors and video artists (see “La Matta Dei Fiori”) introduced the Italian-born composer as a master of both moody spatiality and polyphonic melody. After relocating to London, Remiddi began to play with indie acts like Three Blind Mice, Sunny Day Sets Fire, and Filthy Dukes, revealing himself to be a student of Swedish pop as much as of composers like Morricone and Tiersen.

In the past year, Remiddi has been releasing solo recordings under the name Porcelain Raft. In interviews, he's cited a desire to create a DIY, work-in-progress feel with these recordings, but despite their reel-to-almost-unfinished-reel quality, the songs are surprisingly full and disarmingly emotive. The project spans a wide stylistic range, from the dreamy shoegaze of “Tip of Your Tongue” to the post-something simplicity of “Despite Everything,” and we're anxious to hear the textures come to life when Porcelain Raft opens for Yuck tonight at the Ninth Ward (341 Delaware Ave, 7pm, $14).
