In 1997, experimental rockers the Flaming Lips released a four disc recording, titled Zaireeka, meant to beplayed on four separate stereos. Each CD can be played on it's own or paired with one of the other albums or played all at once or so on. You get the idea. The songs are not so much as songs, but rather compositions, and the one who hits the play button(s) becomes a composer of sorts as you can control the volume, bass, treble, etc, to create an absolutely unique musical experience. Needless to say, no one playing of Zaireeka is ever the same. When the band first released Zaireeka, they held "boom box" experiments in parking garages where band members would conduct a couple dozens participants, all with a stereo containing one of the Zaireeka cassettes or CDs, to create their own warped orchestra.
Tonight at Sugar City, the venue will be hosting their 3rd annual Zaireeka listening party with each disc being played on it's own sound system. Videos, projections, and more will accompany the music, which begins at 7:30. Costumes are encouraged(if you have ever been to a Flaming Lips show, you know what I mean) and raffles will be held giving away Flaming Lips related swag. Admission is free.
