Concert Review: Merchants

Last night I trekked 45 minutes into the vast unknown that is Youngstown, NY to a house show where up-and-coming Buffalo based trio, Merchants, performed a post-Super Bowl set to an intimate crowd. I had initially caught wind of the band two weeks ago at a late-night show at Nietzsche’s, where my initial reaction was “WHY AREN’T MORE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT THIS BAND?” Well, the reason why few people are talking about this talented threesome is because they have close to zero internet presence. No facebook/soundcloud/bandcamp/myspace/sonicbids/no recorded material. The band, comprising of guitarist/vocalist Ben Maries, bassist Gabe Nasca, and drummer Yoav Ehrenhalt, is comparable to the Black Keys, Real Estate, or Queens of the Stone Age. Maries’ vocals sound eerily similar to the late, great Kurt Cobain. That is a ballsy comparison, but after you sit through a set you will see the resemblence. February will be the last month the band is active before Maries and Nasca retreat to Alaska for close to a year, putting the band on an indefinite hiatus until 2013. Do yourself a favor and check these guys out before they disappear into the wild. Merchants, you need to record some material so I don’t have to introduce you to the world via youtube, buffaBLOG is waiting.
