I grew up a child of the nineties. Like everybody else, I watched Saved by the Bell (unironically I might add), wore JNCO's when I shouldn't have, and secretly pined over Winona Ryder, back when she was still cool and dark. I also listened to my fair share of "summer" music. Summer music is music that doesn't really make sense to listen to at any other time. Songs with absolutely no meaning whatsover, but they make you feel good when the sun is shining and girls are wearing bikinis. They are also, more often than not, disposable. Who knew that 15 years later Smashmouth would be so uncool? (Well, I guess everybody did).
It came as a pleasant surprise the other day when my friend, knowing that I am a huge fan of critically-ridiculed music and party jams, asked me if I was going to be driving to Columbus, Ohio or any other big city to see the Summerland Tour. Not knowing any better, I went on the internet and was pretty shocked at the all star lineup. Everclear, Sugar Ray, Lit, Gin Blossoms, and Marcy Playground. I cannot think of a more appropriate nineties lineup. Unfortunately, the tour won't be hitting Buffalo. Fortunately, I like road trips and Columbus, OH (the nearest city) is a scant 6-7 hour drive. Needless to say, I'll be making the trek. July 10th is the date, but if you plan on going, I'd get tickets now. They're cheap ($15-30) and I imagine they will go quickly, with nineties music currently all the rage.
This show is a great opportunity to travel back in time and re-connect with the teenage you; that is, if your as old as me. What better way to spend a beautiful summer day than screaming your favorite 90's jams with the bands themselves. Blasting "Fly" on repeat all day long.
i am predicting a lot of cowboy hats and aviators.
