Tonight: The Detroit Cobras

"I could eat one or I could eat three/ It takes a lot of dogs to satisfy a girl like me," sings Rachel Nagy, tongue planted firmly in her cheek, on the song "Hot Dog". It takes a whole lot of grit and swagger to deliver a line like that without seeming cheesy or contrived, but that's just what the Detroit Cobras' frontgal has in spades. You don't pause to think the innuendo through; you just keep dancing.

The Detroit Cobras formed in 1994 as a retro-garage cover band, pounding out pub-ready throwback rock way before it became trendy. They sound a bit like the bands that would ride the genre all the way to MTV years later (see: Strokes, Karen O.), with plenty of soul and 60s girl-pop thrown in for good measure. And they're actually from Detroit, too - there's not an ounce of pretense to be found (I'm looking at you, ironic hipster bands).

The Cobras are going to be bringing all their glorious grit and swagger to Mohawk Place tonight (47 E. Mohawk, 9pm, $10). Support from Irving Klaws and Tell-Tale Signs alone is enough reason to head down alone, but be sure to be there, ready to blast an ungodly amount of whiskey deep into your soul and dance your guts out to some of the coolest garage bands around.
