Local Artist Spotlight: The Mechanical Migraines

John Walsh, synth and guitar player of Buffalo dream pop act Cemeteries, and childhood friend Zach Lebold have been creating music together for years under the moniker of the Mechanical Migraines, making full albums off their Windows Sound Recorder program (remember that?), truly embodying the lo-fi aspect of their sound.  Although calling the Mechanical Migraines a side project would take away from their years of recording, the experimental duo's newest release is not too unlike the DIIV's side project to Beach Fossils:  distant, echoing vocals, heavier arrangements, and layer upon layer of tracks. The duo just released their latest collection of music, titled Tapes(artwork above), which can be streamed and downloaded here.  The title is taken from Walsh's experiences on using tape recorded samples from his youth and blending them with vocals to create atmospheric soundscapes.  Repeated listens recall a less thunderous Secret Machines, especially on the chanting like vocals, and early Animal Collective/Panda Bear.  Check out the Tapes' lead off track "Ghosts."
