The period in which young bands incorporate their collective influences and start to hone in on a sound of their own has inevitably become much shorter since the internet has allowed artists to gain a significant following without having any proper releases or even any show experience to their credit. Part of what makes many current debut albums so exciting is that they serve as this documented development for artists trying to merge multiple musical ideas into something cohesive. Chicago-based indie rockers California Wives make their way to Babeville’s Ninth Ward tonight in support of their debut, Art History, which merges the coy, laid back style of 90’s indie with the energy and pop sensibilities of 80’s new wave. Their highly accessible sound is full of intricacies that don’t go unnoticed and leave us expecting good things to come from a band that caught the ears of national outlets like Pitchfork and My Old Kentucky Blog following their showcase at 2011’s South By Southwest festival in Austin. Opening the show are local bands Searching for Dinosaurs and Breckenwood.
