Tonight: LL Cool J

They call him “Big Elly.” Ladies love him. Girls adore him. I mean, even the ones who never saw him like the way he rhymes at a show. James Todd Smith, better known as LL Cool J, has made a career out of swooning over women. Smooth, romantic R&B sounds, like the ones with Boyz II Men on his 1995 track, “Hey Lover” and his 2002 hit “Luv U Better,” paired with his assertive but sultry rapping style have been driving the ladies crazy since the early ‘90s. It also doesn’t help that he takes his shirt off in most of his videos, either. But he’s LL Cool J. And I’m not complaining.

(Remember when Coach was a “rich person’s” brand and nobody ever heard of Louis Vuitton? My have times changed.)

But it’s more than just a crush. What makes LL a great entertainer is his versatility. He has a rowdy side too, and he mixes it up by throwing it down whenever. We all remember the rough, gritty-sounding, old school hip hop jam “Momma Said Knock You Out” and the aggressive, in-your-face ‘80s rap on “I Can’t Live Without My Radio.” And I can’t write about LL without mentioning his 2003 club joint, “Headsprung.” Who didn’t get wild any time they heard that on the radio?

Tonight, LL Cool J is bringing back old school hip hop to the Erie Canal Harbor by performing the classics. The show starts at 6 pm and is $20 at the door. I really hope he brings back his Kangol fedoras and one-legged track suits, too.
