Thee Oh Sees have been around for about
15 years, serving largely as a vehicle for frontman John Dwyer to
produce a Jack Whitian -er- Jay Reatardian amount of grungy garage rock.
But it really wasn't until last year that the group caught some
semi-mainstream attention, when the song “Tidal Wave” was
featured in perhaps the most bad-ass, gratifying scene of Breaking Bad, when the evil meth dealer Gus poisoned the
even more eviler Cartel. Fitting, and about time, as Thee Oh Sees had
been putting out some of the most bad-ass, gratifying music, albeit
under the radar, for so long. Dwyer typically proffers evil,
monster-voiced lyrics, accompanied by his haunting chanteuse, and set
to some seriously slimey, grimey surf guitar riffage. Also: some flute.
Apart from their memorable inclusion on
a TV soundtrack, 2011 was a busy year for the group, with the release
of two studio albums and some heavy touring. The tour train somehow
skipped Buffalo, so their appearance tonight at Town Ballroom (681
Main St., 7PM, $17) should make for much anticipated face time.
Get down to see them share the bill with the also-incidentally
awesome Ty Segall.
