As a decidedly artist-friendly and accessible city, Buffalo has become a home over the year for many international artists and musicians. Tonight, Allen Street Hardware will host three of them, as they bring the international rhythms they love to to Allentown -- Argentine tango, Brazilian forros, and Latin cumbias.
At 7:30 pm Allen Street Hardware will host in their back room world-renowned tango singer La Gata, accompanied on the bandoneon by composer Moshe Shulman. La Gata, now 86 years old, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she fell in love with the native sounds of tango. For the last 50 years, La Gata has been living out her nine lives traveling the world interpreting the songs of her homeland. She landed in Buffalo nearly two years ago and has since been delighting audiences with her unique tango interpretation during performances at Rust Belt Books, El Buen Amigo, and Hardware.
In her performance, La Gata evokes the very personality of tango itself -- filling the heart and the head with passion, drama, longing, melancholy, and ultimately love. She will be backed by the very talented Moshe Shulman, a classically trained violinist and composer who traveled earlier this year to Argentina to study the craft of the bandoneon, tango's traditional accompaniment. Since returning, the Russian-born musician has been leading Buffalonians across the city in the lust for tango through live performances with his Buffalo Tango Orchestra, as well as in special acts like this one with La Gata.
Opening the show with be BrasiloAccordeon, an ecclectic range of Brazilian Forro and other South & Central American folk dance tunes, featuring the Franco-Brazilian-American Jeremy Spindler on accordion, Pat Braun on drums and guitar, Katie Pfohl on triangle and percussion and Ryan Fulton on bass. Be prepared to dance to their Cumbias and Forros!
Admission is $10 including a program which translates the tango songs to English; $20 includes La Gata's CD; or $30 includes La Gata's CD and the feature length DVD documentary on her life.
