buffaBLOG's 12 Days of Christmas: Day 1 - The Shins

The holiday season is closing in on it's final lap, with less than two weeks to go until Christmas Day.  Keeping with blog tradition, today starts our "12 Days of Christmas" series, in which we hope to turn you on to some holiday tunes maybe off your radar, leading right up to the big day. On Day 1 of the series, I turned to Holidays Rule, a recently released holiday compilation, featuring some select covers from the likes of Sharon Van Etten, Calexico, Preservation Jazz Hall, and more.  For their contribution, the Shins decided to cover the once charming, now insufferable Christmas tune "Wonderful Christmastime" by Paul McCartney.  Removing layers of cheese is not an easy task, but the Shins manage to do just that, adding whimsical harmonies and retro keys.  The song makes me think what Brian Wilson, a clear influence on any of the Shins early work, would have done with his "wall of sound/pocking symphony" techniques.
