2012 can best be defined as the year that my ears were completely saturated with music. A seemingly endless supply of awesome new jams came out this year, and for me to sit here and list them all would be a fruitless task. Instead, I'm going to focus on LOCAL music. After all, this blog centers around Buffalo and Western NY, so why not give a little love to the underdogs. Some of these artists you might know or might have heard before, either here on the blog or through seeing them live. Either way, they've deserved their spots on this list. Just a couple things to note. In the albums section, I included demo's, EP's and 7", and in the top local shows I included bands that played Buffalo but may not necessarily be from here. 5. The Tell-Tale Signs - FourTuneTeller 7" EP
If you're a fan of 60's garage rock, 13th Floor Elevators or psychedelic-tinged rock'n'roll look no further than this awesome EP. It's packed with body-swaying melodies and it will transport you back in time.
4. Ancients of Earth - Aeternus Terra
The closet thing Buffalo has to Explosions in the Sky. Pure instrumental bombast. Deeply moving, ambient doom shoegaze rock. The tension release aspects of this band are unreal.
3. Chosen Ones - They Called Your Number
Chosen Ones are punk rock meets Bruce Springsteen. Hardened street tales told over classic rock tunes played hard and fast.
2. Canary Girls - Everything is Changing
This band was once described to me as "perfect Top Gun soundtrack music". After listening to the album I can see why. It's very fun, floaty and danceable. It's also very 80's, but with some modern tricks. I couldn't stop dancing when I heard this disc.
1. Aircraft - EP
For me there was no other choice. I see big things coming from Aircraft. They write incredibly catchy songs (see: Meteorite, Wilt) and walk that fine line between accessible and art-driven. It's a beautiful place to be.

5. Red Delicious - "Rust"
This track reminds me of everything that was perfect about 90's alternative rock songs. It belongs with Gin Blossoms, Better than Ezra, Buffalo Tom and all those other bands I miss hearing on the radio. The hooks pull you right in!
4. Young Suns - "Viking"
Heavy as all hell.
3. Returners - "Seek"
Returners might be Buffalo's best hope for a break-out indie band. I hear traces of Sonic Youth here.
2. Dr. OoO - "Windstar"
I dare you to listen to this track and not get pulled in to Dr. OoO's hypnotic, space-warping beats and fragmented flow. Plus the video is great. Extra points for that.
1. Aircraft - "Meteorite"
I know, I know. I already mentioned this song and Aircraft got my top spot for best local EP. So what? That album rules and so does this song. Any song that reminds me of the Only Ones, "Another Girl, Another Planet" deserves to be at number one. Power-pop at its best. (The track listed here is "Exist". Go get the EP.

5. Black Angels - Town Ballroom
A true psychedelic meltdown. I felt like I was in the middle of a Jefferson Airplane concert in '67. If you were there you know what I mean.
4. Snapcase - Outer Harbor
It's been a few years since their last "reunion" and they haven't lost a step. Absolutely crushed this night, playing a great mix of End Transmission jams as well as alot of older stuff. Blew Dropkick Murphy's outta the water.
3. Odonis Odonis - Mohawk Place
A sparsely attended show and an overlooked band. This was my first time hearing Odonis Odonis and I was blown away. Great mix of sonics and stage presence. Picture a heavier, punk rock version of Joy Divison.
2. Megadeth - Rapids Theatre
You either like metal or you don't. They played all of Countdown to Extinction.
1. Cloud Nothings - Ninth Ward (with Sleepy Hahas and A Classic Education)
Both sets by the openers were incredible but Cloud Nothing's took it, pure and simple. Sometimes you're at a concert and know you're experiencing something special. This was one of those nights.
