Cooking with Thoughts: Elementary Explorations into the Science of Music

Though nearly everybody thinks of themselves as music fans and many have been given a taste of music theory, most have never looked into the hard science behind perhaps the most popular and endearing of the arts. At San Francisco’s Exploratorium, the Museum of Science, Art, and Human Perception, an exhaustive exhibit exists to remedy a common lack of music science knowledge. Fortunately, you can skip a trip to California and boost your understanding of acoustics and more at the Exploratorium website.

Featuring online exhibits with telling names like “Dot Mixer,” “Kitchen Sink-o-Pation,” “Step Re-Mix,” “Online Drum Circle,” “Headlands Experience,” and “Take the Beat Back,” the Exploratorium website provides a charming, interactive approach to understanding the science of music.

Though the target audience seems to be older children, the site still comprehensively answers  basic questions about music you yourself might have had such as: “Why does my recorded voice sound so strange to me?”; “Why do some songs get stuck in my head?”; and “Why does some music give me goose bumps?” Many of the answers contain fairly straightforward biology and physics, but the simplicity of the explanations make the site all the more helpful.
