When I saw Chicago's Smith Westerns released this track last week, I was all ready to write about it in this column, but the song didn't grab me at first so I passed. After a weekend of soaking it in, I am now all about it so here we are. "Varsity" is much more blubble gum pop than anything I heard on their last album, the lo-fi, glammed up Dye It Blonde. Sugary, sweet vocals are ushered by a piercing synth, while a pretty restrained melody and those always welcome 'oohs' give the song an extra layer of comforting, youthful nostalgia. "Varsity" is featured on Smith Westerns upcoming album Soft Will and will be released this June.
