NYC chip-punk band Anamanaguchi has
been pretty active, though a bit under the radar, for a few years. They were
tapped to score the soundtrack of the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
video game back in 2010, then they kicked back to work on new
material, tour around meatspace, and probably, like, play a ton of
Atari. The new material was then compiled for their upcoming LP
(Endless Fantasy, out this Spring), and they dropped a video for the
first single, “Meow,” earlier this year. The band claims the
sounds were mostly created with a Nintento NES console and an old
Gameboy, but the catchy 8-bit whirlwind only barely obfuscates some
driving, distorted guitar riffs and a relentless punk rhythm attack.
The song has got them some indie music traction already, from an
appearance on The Chris Gethard Show a few weeks ago, to an upcoming
SXSW stint/international touring, and now the track has been picked
up by Oreo (yeah, that Oreo) for a marketing/commercial campaign. The
music video couldn't be a better fit for the song, too: an overload
of nostalgic, blocky videogame imagery as the bandmates navigate a hyperreal day at the Arcade. Check it out below:
