Scourge Of The Internet

I think it's safe to say that all bloggers like comments. The other metrics by which blogs are judged are all well and good, but comments mean that somebody read your post and decided to spend a few minutes of their life responding to it, and that's nice now matter how you cut it. The exception of course are the anonymous shit stirrers. The scourge of the Internet, there's nothing worse than them.

Yes, there's been some shenanigans lately, and I feel compelled to express my disapproval over the innate cowardliness of posting bs on a blog post anonymously. Unless you're whistle-blowing in the name of the common good, I just don't see much courage in talking smack or calling somebody out without attaching your name to it. If you're going to put shit on the Internet, you should own that shit. We do. Commenters who use a signifier do, and I thank them for their candor and input.

And if refraining from talking out of your ass is the result of you attaching your name to a comment, well bully for you. You just might be on your way to becoming a success as an adult in polite society. Maybe. At the very least, you've gotten over your cowardice, and that's something. Please don't get me wrong. I love comments and when people give me shit, especially if it's constructive, but this anonymous stuff is just weak tea. Own it!

Now, some music for your enjoyment...

  1. u mad bro?

  2. There's only one mad person, and we're all laughing at him

  3. This is Jack White explaining where the name Sea of Cowards came from for a Dead Weather album. "The album title refers to the way the internet allows people to spit venom and knock people in a cowardly way using fake names. It seems to me that people aren't teaching this generation anything about responsibility.
The internet allows people to make a statement that the whole world can read and listen to-but they're too much of a coward to leave their actual name."
