The 2013 BALLE (Business Alliance for Local Living Economies) kicks off it's 3 day conference in Buffalo today. Designed to spark ideas and conversation on how to better the economic climate in certain cities through local initiative, the conference's touchdown in the Queen City is a big deal in a town that finally seems to be on the upswing. While BALLE in Buffalo isn't all about business (well it kind of is), there is a healthy dose of live musical offerings to check out during the conference. The full lineup of BALLE related shows, which was curated by the Good Neighborhood, can be found here, but if you need some guidance, here are a few that stand out:
1) Dave Calos & Friends @ the Waiting Room (Wed, Jun 12th, 9pm) - frontman to the crunchy three piece Bearhunter and member of the autumnal Applennium, Calos will play the songwriter stage upfront at Buffalo's newest venue tonight. Expect some select tunes from Bearhunter's stellar new album Call It A Red and maybe some surprise collaborations from whatever fellow musicians join Calos for the evening. Conference attendees get in for free, non only $3. Plus, $2 Southern Tier pints aren't too shabby either.
2) The Andrew J Reimers Country-Punk Extravanga @ the Lexington Co-Op (Thurs, June 13th, 7-10pm) - part of Buffalo's biggest Cash Mobs yet, various Elmwood Village shops will be paired with local art merchants and musicians beginning tomorrow at 5pm. You are already going to the Co-Op already to get at that hot bar anyways, so stay for a minute to catch the city's best alt-country acts.
3) BALLE Closing Party @ Larkin Square (Fri, June 14th, 5:30pm) - If only as an excuse to check out one of the better city developments in recent years, stop by Larkinville at Larkin Square after work for the BALLE Happy Hour and Closing Party. With their free Wednesday "Live at Larkin" summer series set to kick off next week, this is a good excuse to check out the space as long time DJ Mike Cutler kicks the party off. If you want to keep the party going, head over to Nietzsche's later in the evening at 10pm for the late night show with Son of the Sun, the Tins, and more. Cover is $5 or free if you are an attendee.
