Tonight: The Tragically Hip with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

In what has to be a major victory for fans of handkerchiefs, live music, and long legs, The Tragically Hip are coming to the Outer Harbor tonight with very, very special guests Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. While both bands lack the widespread appeal of a band like The Black Keys, who played a ridiculous show earlier this month at the same venue, the harbor will be full of rabid, unwavering fans this evening.

Why? That's a great question. You can thank me for asking it. While both of these bands are above-average in the studio, they manage to get people to completely fall in love with them during their live performances. Gord Downie's irreverent dancing and speaking is what the people want; I can guarantee you he will gyrate like a madman and make at least six comments about Route 5 over the course of their set. And then there's the Angel From God, I mean Grace Potter. The Nocturnals are an extremely talented blues-rocky band and I'd listen to them even if they had Roseanne singing for them, but Grace Potter absolutely owns the stage. Her voice - smooth and crisp, powerful and sensual - is out of this world and her presence is just remarkable.

Tickets are still available for $50, which might sound steep but you'd be a fool to not pay $25 to see either of these bands. So think about it like that, if it helps. The gates open at 6 and the show will probably start around 7.
