I Was The Scarecrow Graces Us With Death to Self

Hearing I Was The Scarecrow winding up, then settling into the grit of the opening song "First Church of the Coast United," I knew I was going to like this band. Call it a guilty pleasure, but I stand guilty with pleasure when I say I like Rob Zombie; I would also like to inject an addendum of "I like Sonic Youth too." Death to Self is like listening to the wails of a Rob Zombie/Sonic Youth baby. Peter Vullo's smokey growl and the accompanying jams of bassist Casey Mullaney and drummer Jannell Viera sends me to my happy place.

The icing on the cake is the fact that I Was The Scarecrow was essentially a folk group featuring a few other guys, but only Peter Vullo remaining in the current lineup. Vullo's former Lou Reed approach transformed (ha, get it?) into a voice that sounds like a loogie held itself up in his throat. Seriously, seriously enjoyable, post-punky, grizzly, strut-it-up, scream-it-out music that has just become my future top played album cos' I just bought that shit, y'all.
