Excitement over Built to Spill coming to Buffalo might send
90s alt-rock curators right over the edge when they visit this coming tonight. We
couldn’t be more fortunate to have the amazingly innovative Doug Martsch step
foot on stage and grace us with his sanctified guitar licks and giant
ever-flowing beard.
Since 1992, BTS has produced awe-inspiring album after
another with varying leans toward blues and lo-fi grunge and whatever the hell
Martsch decides sounds good. The band is in good hands. His signature voice can
be spotted in Treepeople, the Halo Benders and naturally, his solo act starting
in 2002, all of which are met with critical acclaim.
The sounds of BTS have served as inspirations to the likes
of Modest Mouse, Death Cab for Cutie, Band of Horses and countless others.
Needless to say, the three BTS-stirred bands are high on the faves list of many
indie-lovin’ peoples, so imagine what the band-that-started-it-all sounds like.
After 17 years and seven full-length albums that
relentlessly make their home high on music charts of all variety, Martsch still
modestly writes off Built to Spill’s success saying, “I take it all with a grain of salt because if we weren't around it would
have been someone else. It has to do with timing and the region.” Maybe…but
we’re not buyin’ it.
We care, Built to Spill. We care. And we’ll prove it tonight at Town Ballroom.
