Thanksgiving is just three days away, and in the spirit of the season, I thought to take the time to share all the things in music that I'm thankful for right now.
First off, I'm thankful that I live in the Kanye West era. I mean, I love his music, but it goes beyond that. There's absolutely nothing this guy won't do, and it's always going to be interesting. Whether you loved or hated his controversial "Bound 2" video, you were undoubtedly thinking about it, which is exactly what he wants. He's a mad creative genius, and he's not afraid to say it, which is why he pisses so many people off. Frankly, though, even when he gets on my nerves, I'm still incredibly glad that this guy is around. Just think of how boring music - and pop culture - would be without him.
I'm also thankful for the emergence of Lorde, who made a brilliant album at the age of 16, and probably has even more amazing things coming. While fantastic songs like "400 Lux" and "Glory And Gore" should be appreciated for what they, it's hard not to get ahead of myself, and wonder what she'll be doing at 25. She is going to be a thrilling artist to watch over the next decade.
I'm thankful that not only are David Bowie and Paul McCartney still making new music, they're still making albums people actually want to listen to. Bowie's The Next Day and McCartney's New both ranked among the strongest records of 2013, and it's good to know that age has not hindered their ability to write vital, inventive music.
I'm thankful for Justin Timberlake, who made the music he wanted to make, regardless of the naysayers. Are there moments on each 20/20 Experience album that get a bit dull? Sure, but the overall product is outstanding, and shows that he's still a force in pop music, no matter how many snarky bloggers want to declare otherwise.
I'm especially thankful for Janelle Monae, who is amazing, and who defies any and all categorization musically. She's already made two brilliant albums, and who knows what's coming next.
I'm thankful for Chvrches, who made the synthpop album in years, and have finally filled the enormous void that existed when Yaz broke up.
Look I could go on all day with this, but the basic point is that music is pretty awesome right now. We tend to romanticize the past, and complain about how there are no modern equivalents of say, Jimi Hendrix or Mick Jagger, but that's not what's important. This is a wonderful time for music, as artists both young and old are creating vital albums that we'll probably still be listening to two decades from now. That, above all else, is what I'm thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving.
