Upon hearing the opening notes of the title track from the new Broken Bells record, I immediately noticed that the song sounded a bit like the Talking Heads classic "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)." Mind you, this is not to suggest that Danger Mouse and James Mercer cribbed anything in particular from David Byrne and company, just that the song has a rather similar vibe. This is hardly surprising. Talking Heads were always dedicated to making intelligent music that one could easily dance to, and "After The Disco" certainly fits that bill. Mercer contemplates on the fleeting nature of partying and celebration, while also giving us an excellent groove to celebrate to. If this is any indication, After The Disco should be an excellent, perhaps even surpassing their brilliant debut.
