The Spin Wires Let It All Out of Pandora's Box

The story of The Spin Wires reads like a bad college movie starring Ashton Kutcher circa 2003. Tyson Prince (Guitar/Vocals) met Joe Grasso (Drums) at a “Yard Olympics” tournament (think Redneck Olympics, except more drinking and less tractors) during the Summer of 2012. After being cheated out of the bronze medal in a highly contested game of baggo (which is basically Cornhole), the duo met up at a local bar a few days later. At this unsaid bar, they were approached by RJ Porter (Bass/Vocals). Porter adamantly declared he would play any instrument and any type of music as long as he was strictly supplied with Canadian beer while doing it; with the addition of a discriminating bassist, The Spin Wires were born.

So, what do you do when you drop your debut EP? Well if you’re Buffalo’s own The Spin Wires, you get your own Pandora station of course. I mean that was obvious, right? How does one get their own Pandora station you might ask? Prince explains “Pandora ended up including us in their Genome project, analyzed our songs and created a station that includes us with similar artists. It’s actually a really great station, with some really catchy songs. It’s a great opportunity for us to gain exposure while people listen to other artists and for our listeners to find other awesome artists.” Sounds easy enough, right? Well I guess if you think rocket surgery is easy, then yes. But for the rest of us, not so much. There are certain admission standards such as Amazon record sales, and after you meet the standards  they then review your material. From there, they determine whether they would like to include it on Pandora.

The Spin Wires bring their own brand of Dance/ Punk to the party with undercurring elements of New Wave and Garage. Their self titled EP (released late last year) channels The Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, and The Photo Atlas, without compromising their brand. They combine elements of both rock with “Ignite” and radio friendly pop with “Should I Dance or Should I Die.” This combination comes to a full salute on tracks like, “Girls Like You” and “Drunk With You.” No matter how perfectly these elements are blended, we are at times left confused. What is so confusing? Well for starters, exactly what they are attempting to do? No one wants or needs to put labels on themselves, but one needs to make choices. Whatever it is that they are doing, we just don’t get it, and maybe thats the point, maybe we aren’t suppose to get it. After all this is the same band that does “manly” covers of Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, and Icona Pop while dressed as Cowboys and Super Heroes. We’re not asking for a personalized e-card, it just would be nice to be in on the joke.
