Working Out is more lyrically complex and emotionally ambiguous than most titles sharing its aesthetic ideas. Girardot and co-vocalist Orlando Leopard trade singing duties with smooth finesse and the production treats the band's guitars, keyboards, and drums as humble partners with their voices. Arthur Beatrice has emerged from the ether polished and prepared to accompany morning walks through the city, wind-down bedtime routines, and late-night studying sessions.
Even if Working Out fails to break new musical ground, it succeeds as a superior example of its sub-genre. It would be more than uncharitable to dismiss such a lovely, intelligently wrought debut for sounding too much like other very good bands. The talented members of Arthur Beatrice should have a fine future ahead of them.
