Tonight: The Ifs & Inlite at Party for the Parks

The Olmsted Parks Conservancy is having its annual Party for the Parks this evening at Delaware Park. This is the 9th party the conservatory has hosted and all the proceeds benefit the Olmsted park and parkway system. The tickets are $25 dollars at the door and the party begins at 6:30pm. The party includes food, drinks, auctions, and of course music. This years party theme is the British invasion. The bands performing on the floating stage in Hoyt Lake are Inlite and The Ifs. Inlite is a Brit-pop/rock group based out of Grand Island. These local rockers combine an 80s music vibe to a synth-pop/rock sound from across the pond. The bands EP For Future Reference is available right now and should be listened to as soon as possible. The Ifs are a jazz-rock band established in the late 1960s in Britain. They have shared the stage with the likes of Muddy Waters, Cream, and Kiss and have released 8 studio albums. The Ifs are one of the few jazz-rock groups to feature solos by all members, not just by the lead instruments.

With Jugglers, fire dancers, a British car show this evening sounds alright. With fireworks, an appearance from the Queen City Roller Girls, and some great music this evening sounds amazing. If you get the chance, get out there tonight and have an awesome time while supporting and helping preserve our Buffalo parks. Happy concert going.

Tonight: Billy Drease Williams

University at Buffalo hosts an outdoor family friendly event including activities, workshops and music called UB on the Green. Today UB is hosting a staple on the hip hop scene for 20 + years, Billy Drease Williams. This native of Western New York has made his name in the music industry rapping and producing. Getting his start in the group The Elements, which included the brothers Alan and Neal Evans of soulive (one of my favs), the group was short lived but Billy's talent was apparent. After a couple of his songs were featured in the video game ESPN NFL2k5, he made the move from mainstream to indie. He signed with the local record label DTR45, and since has released three albums with the label. Williams has been praised for his unique style and positive message in his songs and lyrics. Aside from positive lyrics, he also is the executive director of The Art of Hip Hop, a not for profit organization dedicated to educating the future and celebrating culture. This man can not only perform but he is also a positive light in an industry clouded by negative messages. This show begins at 6pm tonight and is sure to open your eyes to the talents of one of buffalo's favorite hip hop artists. Happy concert going.

Tonight - The Zombies

The living dead will be infesting the Seneca Niagara Casino? No silly doomsdayer, the Casino will be hosting The Zombies. Formed across the pond in England in 1961, The Zombies were part of the British Invasion in the better part of the 1960s. In 1964 after the release of their first single "She's Not There", The Zombies were sent to the Untied States to begin touring and promoting their album. The state side success, however, was short lived. After a few less popular releases, the band broke up in 1968, but not before they released the album Odessey and Oracle with the single "Time of the Season". Although the album did not do well in England, the single made its way back over to the US and became a hit. Their newest album, Breathe Out Breathe In, was released this year with two of the original members of the group. This band has stood the test of time and should be a rocking, groovy experience this weekend. Happy concert going.

New music video from Son of the Sun

Buffalo's own Son of the Sun have just released a new music video. "My Best Mistake" is the new single off of the June 2011, 6 song EP release Almost Not There. The video, shot in Los Angeles, shows off beautiful landscapes, pretty women and a little bit of kaleidoscope vision. Directed by Jeremiah Hammerling and Rita Baghdadi, the pair does a great job capturing the songs story and message. This well crafted song is a bold example of this home grown 5 pieces' ability to think, write, and play "outside the box" and blaze their own trail. Combination's of retro jams with alternative, blues, rock creates a melting pot of thoughtfully crafted sounds. This song will 110% get you interested in this band. After watching the video below, go to their website, where you can get all of their CDs.

New Blakroc album in the works

What do you get when you mix a cat and a dog? Catdog. What do you get when you mix a rhino and a horse? A unicorn (duh). What do you get when you mix The Black Keys with some of hip hops best talent? Blakroc. Blakroc is a rock/rap group that guest hosts a multitude of different rappers over The Black Keys funky, blues/jam sounds. The brainchild of Roc-a-fella C.E.O Damon Dash, he contacted the Keys at first because he was a fan of their sound. Dash got them in the studio with 11 artists, and 11 days later the first CD was recorded. Their first album, Blakroc, released in November of 2009, included appearances from Raekwon, RZA, Ludacris and Mos Def. The CD was well received by the public and got to number seven on billboards' rap albums list. The newest CD has been confirmed, but for now holds the dreaded "COMING SOON" release date. Artists on the new CD, simply titled Blakroc 2, include Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, Talib Kweli, Jim Jones, and the Cool Kids. This preview video has a great feel to it and I'm excited to see what all this talent is capable of. I don't know when coming soon is, but I'm hoping its sooner than later.

Album Review: Curren$y - Verde Terrace

Spitta Andretti aka Curren$y has done it again with his latest release Verde Terrace. Hosted by DJ Drama, this mixtape marks the fourth CD this year for Curren$y. This release has put him one shy of his amazing goal of five albums for 2011. The 30 year old New Orleans native seems to be as dedicated to song writing as he is to weed smoking. Staying true to form, this album blends well thought out refer inspired rhymes with his signature laid back beats. From the first listen, I was again impressed by the variety of each verse and his ability to take each track and put his mark on it. His choice to work with different DJs on each CD brings a refreshing change to each album and a genre that can become repititive quickly. Although the DJs change per CD, Curren$y’s intelligent lyrical style seems to flow effortlessly over each track. The smooth delivery and crafty wordplay are two of the many reasons this man has had gotten to where he is today. The only down side to this very good, very free mixtape is the 39 minute playing time. The nasally voice mixed with the spacey beats makes for a solid listen and is another great mixtape to add to your collection from one of the industries exciting up and coming rappers.
