Today is the last Saturday of summer and we get to celebrate it the right way with the 11th Annual Music Is Art Festival running from 10 AM to 10 PM on Lincoln Avenue behind the Albright Knox Art Gallery. The MIA Festival has really hit it's stride now that it's found a perfect home in what really is Buffalo's sweetest spot, that wonderful nexus of Buff State, the Albright Knox and Burchfield Penney arts centers, Hoyt Lake, the Casino and Shakespeare Hill, and with over a 100 bands playing 8 stages, DJ's, and 100 artists showing all sorts of work, Lincoln Avenue will be where it's at. And best of all it's fun for the whole damn family because MIA is also surprisingly family friendly, and not in a way that's off-putting to the non family set. You don't have to wait until summer for free music!
This Friday at 7:30PM, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery will be showcasing the music of Antonin Dvorak and how he was influenced by American painters of his time. There will be a "mini-lecture", followed by a visual interpretation of Dvorak's New World Symphony. Concluding the event will be performances of Dvorak's "American" String Quartet and a section from his Violin Sonata. These pieces will be performed by a string quartet consisting of Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra musicians.
The temperature range for Friday is between 33-53 degrees... I can't think of much better than free art and music if the weather ends up being closer to the lower end of the spectrum. Take a listen below, you may hear some familiar themes in the "American" Suite.
