There's been a great deal of discussion as to what stands as the area's "concert event of summer." Subjective responses and personal tastes aside, tonight's "Americanarama Festival of Music" likely holds the most impressive line-up you'll find this side of New York state with performances by America's unofficial songwriter laureate, Bob Dylan, Chicago's art rock giants, Wilco, and Jim James' offbeat folk-rock act, My Morning Jacket. Formerly linked together by the Dylan-covering I'm Not There soundtrack, the premier artists will share the stage in the flesh tonight at Darien Lake. The evening of non-stop brilliance starts at 5:30 PM with a few tickets still remaining priced around $96.
Is it possible for Darien Lake's Performing Arts Center to have the concert of the summer? Maybe even concert of the year? This is the same venue that draws the hate of so many concert goers every summer mind you. Well, a bill of Bob Dylan, Wilco, and My Morning Jacket just may do it. Yesterday, Dylan's website announced the AmericanaramA Festival of Music and the tour will include a stop at Darien Lake on Thursday, July 18th. Ticket prices are not yet available, but there is a presale on April 30th, with tickets to the general public going on sale May 4th. Additional ticket information can be found here. Wilco and My Morning Jacket played together in Buffalo a few years back at one of the Rockin the Knox shows, still one of my all time favorite Buffalo shows, and to add Bob Dylan to the bill, well thats just swell. For one night, you may just have to suck it up and go to Darien Lake. You will never have to go again. If you talked to me three days ago I wouldn't have even been able to tell you this show was happening here in Buffalo (check that, Darien Center) tonight. I then fielded a phone call from a friend who won two tickets to the show on 103.3 The Edge (yes, people do actually win things on radio contests). Now I sit here this morning, still in disbelief, that I am going to see Slayer this evening.
That is fucking ridiculous.
I had reserved myself to the belief that I was just never going to see Slayer. I am a casual fan that happens to have a very strong personal connection with one of their songs... from what I can remember my editor telling me I can and cannot talk about via this blog I would say that I am most definitely not allowed to get into that story on a public forum such as this... so I'll leave you to wonder. That wasn't enough for me to ever pay to go to a Slayer show... plus they usually were playing with bands I didn't really care for at all.
Well none of that matters because I will be trekking to Darien Lake Performing Arts Center for the third time in as many weeks to Reign in Blood this evening.
I'm also pumped to see Motörhead. They are another band that I am a casual fan of but, regardless of what I (or anyone else) think about them, you can't deny how influential Motörhead has been for heavy music. On a personal level, Lemmy has been influential on my facial hair choices... what started as a Halloween costume ended up being a life choice for about 5 months and something I break out from time to time to this day.
As far as Anthrax goes... I know they covered "Phantom Lord" by Metallica. I also know that Scott Ian has a ridiculous goatee... and chances are that you will see him if you turn on ANY television program that interviews rock musicians.
I'm not going to pretend to know a goddamn thing about Slipknot. I know they have quite a large following. I think I heard one of their songs once due to it being in the soundtrack for the original Resident Evil movie. They were a little after my time... maybe they weren't... whatever... they wear masks (in case you were unaware). They are the last band to go on tonight, I will probably give them 3-4 songs to impress me, otherwise I'm beating the traffic.
Holy shit, I'm going to see Slayer tonight... my neck is going to hurt tomorrow.

language thrown around when describing the legacy of ‘oldies’ can get pretty
hyperbolic—revolutionary, legendary, the very basis of your mp3 collection!—but
when it comes to the Beach Boys, we don’t have to worry about overstating it.
Brian Wilson played the studio like his instrument, weaving angelic harmonies
and bridging a relationship with technology and music that still dances today.
But we know all this, don’t we? So tonight, Darien Lake, 8pm, Brian and the
rest (not to downplay Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, Al Jardine, and David Marks)
will go through their vast catalogue to what I’d imagine will be a pretty
diverse crowd. So whether you have leathery, crimson red skin, in your mid 50’s
and love, ‘Daddy took the T-bird Away’ or you’re wearing fake Ray-bans to hide
the tears during ‘I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times’ (that’s me), this is a
show for all of us. In an age where we have genres, subgenres, and subfacets of
those (I’m looking at you Moombahton), it’ll be nice to go to a music
show, with a capital M.
Drake along with J. Cole, Waka Flocka Flame, Meek Mill, 2 Chainz and French Montana will be performing tonight 7 pm at the Darien Lake Performing Arts Center. There has been a buzz since the tour release date was announced and now it's finally here. Each artist will bring their own personality to the stage ranging from emotionally sensitive to drug hustling. Hyphy fans will await Flocka's signature 'Flocka call' in the midst of "Hard in Da Paint" while some will whimper to themselves thinking of their bad breakups during Drake's rather depressing and heartbroken "Doing It Wrong."
