Ingrid and her crew played a sold out show at the Town Ballroom on Friday night. I started listening to her music about 4 years ago and haven’t really stopped. At that time, indie pop was hitting a stride among college kids and recent grads, but is now much coveted by younger generations. So I should not have been surprised to see high school girls at her show. I was surprised by a distinguished, older crowd. They started off with a few songs from her newly released album, Human Again, but quickly got in to her older stuff from Everybody (2009), Be OK(2008), and Boys & Girls (2007)… after all, that is why most know her.
Ingrid and the crew seemed impressed by the crowded room full of energy that welcomed them to the hometown of chicken parts slathered in hot sauce and butter. Her dynamic and impressively nimble vocals kept the crowd in going the entire show. Switching back and forth from the guitar to piano to the ukulele (personal favorite), her talent as a musician had the crowd in silence during “Ghost” (dudes were crying), then belting it out and dancing (bouncing in place) full force during “This is War”. Also, she’s funny. You have to love a famous person that can joke like you’re having beers on the back porch. She threw out impromptu songs about Duff’s wings, Wegman’s and had us singing the Oscar Mayer Bologna commercial (you know the words). We were also in the presence of a hometown hero, Elliot Jacobson (drummer).
Although not a Buffalo native, he spent a good portion of his childhood here as evidenced by the choice to order 250 wings from Duff’s for the crew after the show (Mama raised him well). Start to finish, the entire place was lit up with good energy emanating from the band and reflected right back by the crowd- a spot on reflection of her music. Oh and the older, distinguished crowd….chaperones.
