I’m not going to discuss the merits of A$AP Rocky or Rihanna’s unprecedented domination of the world, so bear with me as I recount a foggy conversation I had the other day regarding Rihanna having been in Buffalo this entire week. A friend of a friend of a friend (seriously) who works at the Hyatt was bringing a fork up to her room, and when he got there, the door cracked open ever so slightly and a soft, caramel-colored arm reached out and grabbed it. That’s some powerful stuff right there: Rihanna, the world’s biggest pop star, a woman who can only give an arm instead of a face-to-face thank you, still uses mundane objects like forks.
Rihanna and mundane; my computer actually allowed those two words to appear in the same sentence. I really wouldn’t be surprised if she somehow arrives on the stage in a helicopter, accompanied by 38 security guards and two cheetahs, at her show tonight at First Niagara Center. This is the first stop on her world tour so it’s going to be a spectacle of epic proportions; there will be yelling, screaming, crying, dreams coming true, and probably some hearts being broken. But as of this writing it’s not sold out: shockingly, you can still get two hundred-level tickets for $95. They are behind the stage but honestly, that wouldn’t be an awful view of Rihanna.
Show starts at 7:30. A$AP Rocky will go on before Rihanna, who will take the stage as soon as Chris Brown is good and ready to let her.
The latest issue of Rolling Stone features Rihanna prominently on the cover, letting us know that she's "crazy in love" with Chris Brown, the man who famously assaulted her four years ago. The story within discusses her controversial decision to stay with Brown, and whether or not she's setting a good example for her fans, and whether or not that actually matters. All of that is worthwile to discuss, but I'd like propose a different query about the biggest star to ever come from Barbados: could she the end up being the biggest pop-star we've ever seen?
If that notion sounds strage to you consider this: Rihanna is 24 years old, and she's already had 12 number one hits. Over the past six years, she's been the biggest presence on the radio by far, as singles like "S&M," "Umbrella," "We Found Love," and many others have dominated the airwaves. While Lady Gaga and even Beyonce will have a failed single from time to time, just about anything Rihanna records becomes a smash hit.
The one time she struggled to make a dent in the charts was with 2009's Rated R, a rather dark pop album that chronicled her feelings after being beaten by Brown. Still, as uncommercial that album was, it still gave her a chart-topping hit with the reggae stomper "Rude Boy," and "Hard" received a fair amount of airplay as well. At this point, she could record a note-for-note cover of Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, and pop and R&B radio stations would end up playing it to death.
Still, she's not the first person to have a good run of hits, so why wonder how immortal she could end up being? Because she's still really young. The Beatles have the most number one hits of all-time with 20, Rihanna already has 12, and in all likelihood, she's just getting warmed up. For comparison, Madonna also had 12 number ones, but her first didn't come until she was 26, older than Rihanna is now. As hard it is to believe, Rihanna has the majority of her career in front of her, and she's likely be topping the charts for quite awhile. I expect her to obliterate the Beatles record, and score 25 number ones, maybe even 30. There's no reason why she shouldn't keep dominating the charts.
Let's remember, whether we like it or not, looks play a huge role in pop success, and Rihanna is one of the most beautiful women in the world. The one thing that might slow her down is the negative reaction to her decision to get back together with Chris Brown. Keep in mind, though, her latest single "Diamonds," was about that very decision, and the public still ate it up, sending it to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. People may not agree with the decisions Rihanna makes, but they continue to be fascinated by her, and they continue to love her music. Don't expect her dominance of mainstream pop and R&B to end any time soon.
Admittedly, she'll probably won't be important as Michael Jackson or Madonna were, but she could still have the greatest career of any pop-star we've seen. She puts out albums at an extremely high rate, and the public loves every single she releases. Over the next ten years, she'll likely have a stream of hits that would make Elvis Presley jealous, and by the time her career is through, she will have established a continued dominance of mainstream music unlike anything we've ever seen. Nothing - not even Chris Brown - will be able to stop her.
I
am no fan of Rihanna, but I am a big fan of Zola Jesus, and this week's Uncovered Cover is a
little something shewhipped up recently to break in her brand new studio. Whereas it's sad
and regrettable the example Rihanna is setting for the kids out there with this
whole Chris Brown thing (alas, Tina Turner she ain't), Zola Jesus aka Nika Roza Danilova on the other
hand is proving to be an excellent role model for the kids: a compelling singer/songwriter/futurist
whose EPs andConnatusdebut album always point to what's
next, and as a live performer her show at the Mohawk last year proved that Zola
Jesus is pure dynamite. This cover of Rihanna’s “Diamonds” is decidedly
minimalist in contrast to the over produced and rubbishy original, nicely chill, and honest. Enjoy.
